The new center replaces the 25-year-old system and equips the department to handle all of the community's various needs.
“This was long overdue,” Police Chief Michael Foligno told Daily Voice.“We had to upgrade the 9-1-1 system,” he said, noting that the backup desk was down since earlier this year and the main desk failed at times. “It was a matter of public safety.”
Unlike many local communities that rely on county dispatch services, Elmwood Park police handle all of the emergency communications in the municipality, including police, fire, EMS and 9-1-1.
The new system will ensure Elmwood Park can continue to provide services to residents in a rapid and efficient manner, authorities said.
A panoramic view of multiple computer screens and close-circuit televisions allow the dispatcher to monitor multiple situations at a glance. A second back-up station was also installed.
“We no longer have to worry about system failures,” Foligno said. “We are comfortable that everything is working as it should.”
